Arnoldââ¬â¢s Epochs of Expansion Essay
ââ¬Å"I am bound by my own definition of criticism: a disinterested endeavor to learn and propagate the best that is known and thought in the world;â⬠(Leitch 824) said the Victorian poet and critic Matthew Arnold. Matthew Arnold, an English poet and critic whose work was both a representative of the Romantic ideas and of the Victorian intellectual concerns later on was the primary literary critic of his age. Arnoldââ¬â¢s critical theories is highlighted mainly through his most important critical prose ââ¬Å"The Function of Criticism at the Present Timeâ⬠in which he examines the role of the critic in society and presents his critical concept. Arnoldââ¬â¢s contribution to literary theory is his theories on epochs of expansion and epochs of concentration, which throughout the course of this essay will be thoroughly explained. Matthew Arnold, a Romantic poet transformed into a critic of the Romantic Age, contributes to the English critical theories, the concept of epo chs of expansion and epochs of concentration. Matthew Arnold, poet and critic was born on December 24 1822 in Laleham, Middlesex England and passed away April 15, 1888. He was considered the father of the modern criticism movement into the Objective Theory. Arnold was the eldest son of Thomas Arnold, historian and famous headmaster of Rugby, and of Mary (Penrose) Arnold. Throughout the beginning of Arnoldââ¬â¢s life he was educated at Rugby and then at Balliol College, University of Oxford, where he graduated. Shortly after Arnold graduated he was elected to a fellowship at Oriel, and after teaching a little at Rugby he became a private secretary to the Marquis of Lansdowne. After becoming the private secretary to Lord Lansdowne, he was appointed to inspector of schools, a position he held up until 1886, two years before his death. During his term he went on a number of missions and visitation of European schools. He was impressed by some of the educational systems that he wrote several works about them as well. Arnoldââ¬â¢s literary career can be divided into four separate periods in which the first period was in the 1850s where a large amount of his poems appeared; the second being in the 1860s in which his literary criticism and social criticism emerged; and the third being in the 1870s where his religious and educational writings surfaced; finally the fourth period being the one in the 1880s, where his second set of essays in literary criticism emerged. The fact that Arnold was born into an age thatà was shifting from the Romantics into the Victorian Age gave him a perspective of both ages in which he actually wrote in both ages. Arnold began as a Romantic poet merely writing Romantic poetry and displaying the various Romantic intellectual ideas. Later on, Arnold switched into prose and began writing critical works in which Arnold became a critic of the Romantic Age and intellectual thoughts. Matthew Arnold was one of the most significant literary critics of his age. He was the Professor of Poetry at Oxford from the time of 1857 to 1867, during which he wrote his first books of criticism, including On Translating Homer (1861), Essays in Criticism (1865; Series 2, 1888), In the Study of Celtic Literature (1867), and a number of other books regarding criticism as well. In his first volume of Essays in Criticism, came Arnoldââ¬â¢s most important critical work in the name of ââ¬Å"The Function of Criticism at the Present Time,â⬠in which Arnold examines the role of the critic in society and formulates the critical theory of an epoch of expansion and epoch of concentration. Arnoldââ¬â¢s essay suggests that the criticââ¬â¢s role is one of a personal and social nature but the critic must maintain ââ¬Å"disinterestedness,â⬠according to Arnold, to produce a proper critique. Arnold wanted to lay down the rules for aesthetic art in his age; he wanted them to have rules in order to produce a great anesthetic object. Arnold also tried to establish an aesthetic realm and emphasize the role of critics. Therefore, Arnold wrote ââ¬Å"The Function of Criticism at the Present Time,â⬠which is an essay where he laid down his theory and where he argued for the central role of the critic in collecting and producing great literature. In Arnoldââ¬â¢s essay ââ¬Å"The Function of Criticism at the Present Timeâ⬠, Arnold asserted that criticism is a positive and noble task. Since, Arnold began as a poet and was a poet himself he gives some emphasis to the creative abilities of the poet yet he also gives a greater emphasis to the analytical abilities of the critic. Matthew Arnold introduced the concept of poetry as a synthesizing process in which the poet synthesizes ideas and puts these ideas together to form a work of art. He also introduced the role of the critic being the analyst of those ideas. So, in other words, Arnold states that the poet collects the information and the critic saturates or dividesà those ideas and by dividing and synthesizing these ideas there will be an artistic process or dialogue in which the poets will see their work analyzed and view their weak points and try to synthesize new and powerful ideas. After the poet synthesizes newer and powerful ideas the critic then will take these ideas and analyze them, divide them, break them apart and talk about the strong and weak points in them, so this is a continual process of analyzing and synthesizing. Arnold gives the poet the creative ability and the critic the analytical ability; yet, both of them are creators, one of them synthesizes and produces or creates and the other analyzes and by analyzing he introduces new ideas to the poet. The critic introduces new ideas to the poet by analysis and discovery and by seeing the objects as they are and not as they are supposed to be. Therefore, the critic and poet are both interdependent on each other and need the other to function well. Furthermore, Arnold formulated a theory in which the world of art passes through periods which are called epochs. There are two epochs: epoch of expansion and the other epoch is an epoch of concentration. Matthew Arnold defined the epoch of expansion as a period in time in which the poets come up with new ideas, ideas that are very rare. Arnold believes that only the artistic world would pass through those two epochs. According to Arnold, the epoch of expansion was seen in two very important periods, the first epoch of expansion is Periclean Athens, in which the greatest voices and works of Aeschylus, Sophocles, and Euripides existed, and the second epoch of expansion is Elizabethan England, where the greatest voices and works of William Shakespeare, Christopher Marlowe, and Ben Jonson flourished. Arnold states that the significance of those periods in the history of art is because they formed many new ideas that were rare at the time. Therefore, according to Arnoldââ¬â¢s definition, an epoch of expansion involved the poet synthesizing and creating a creative work of literature from the intellectual cultural moments at the time into a great work of literature. Arnold also defines the epoch of concentration as the epochs in which the critics find the good use of the ideas introduced in the epoch of expansion and they analyze it, and by analyzing them, they come up with new ideas toà present to the poets. In other words, the epoch of expansion consists of numerous new ideas that are emerge up and many sources in these periods that when they pass, the critics look at them, break them down, analyze them and then produce new ideas. The criticââ¬â¢s role would be of a rational nature in which he analyzes the object or work of literature. Then after the epoch of concentration presents the new ideas to the poets, another epoch of expansion comes to life by the poets in which they synthesized and put together newer ideas from the analysis of the critics in order to present a newer epoch of expansion. Time then passes as well and the critic takes those new ideas, breaks them down again, and analyzes them to come up with fresher ideas. Furthermore, the critics and poets are working one after the other, and each epoch completes the next by displaying its features. Yet, in the epoch of concentration, the criticism produced ââ¬Å"must maintain its independence of the practical spirit and its aim.â⬠(Leitch 822) This quote in simpler words states that the critic should be an unbiased individual that does not let his emotions, thoughts, or any action in the country at the time to influence his analysis and that the analysis presented is based solely on the work of art presented to him. Therefore, the criticââ¬â¢s role ââ¬Å"in all branches of knowledge, theology, philosophy, history, art, science [is] to see the object as in itself it really is.â⬠(Leitch 806) The critics work later on influences the creative powers of the poetââ¬â¢s creativity and therefore precipitat es the ââ¬Å"creative epochs of literature.â⬠(Leitch 808) Arnold states that the great force of the epoch of concentration was England and the greatest voice of this epoch was Burke. The objective theorists made it their job to drift away from the Romantic values and establish their own similar to the Expressive theorists and their rebellions against the Neoclassicists. Therefore, they gave the critic a stronger role in producing great literature, which was not given by previous and older theorists and theories. Hence, Arnold aid that a critic is as important as the poet in this artistic process, which is very similar to Alexander Popeââ¬â¢s ideas. Arnold also stated that the critic ought to have a disinterested way of looking at the world, being natural and not subjective, but objective. Therefore, some of Matthew Arnoldââ¬â¢s influences on his theories were of Aristotle, in the emphasis of the synthesizing process ofà the poet as a creative creator. An influence of Burke in referencing that the poet is a creative force and the critic is a rational force similar to the concept of Imagination and Judgment. There is also the influence of Alexander Pope in relating that the role of criticism is a positive and noble task and that the critic is as important if not more important than the poet himself. Finally, one more influence would be that of the Pragmatic way of asserting that criticism should be a neutral task and not biased. There is no doubt that Arnold influenced numerous individuals with his critical concept that one of those influenced by Arnold is T.S. Elliot, in the manner of replacig the Romantic emphasis on spontaneity, originality, and novelty with the new focus on history, culture and tradition. Elliot also presents his critical work ââ¬Å"The Function of Criticismâ⬠being derived from the same title Arnold used in his critical work ââ¬Å"The Function of Criticism at the Present Time.â⬠Arnoldââ¬â¢s criticism also had a major impact on the work of writers such as Walter Pater, Oscar Wilde, George Eliot, Henry James, Thomas Hardy, and even George Santayana, and Wallace Stevens. Another critic influenced by Matthew Arnold is Harold Bloom, a critic who expresses a lofty disregard for Arnold. Matthew Arnold, therefore, ââ¬Å"defines criticism as involving flexibility, openness, to new experiences, and curiosityâ⬠¦He insists, too, on the ââ¬Ëfree playââ¬â¢ of mind.â⬠(Leitch 805) Within Arnoldââ¬â¢s definition lies the concept of an epoch of expansion and an epoch of concentration being interdependent and related to each other. This view contributed to laying down the roles of each the poet and the critic as being the creative and rational individuals who synthesize and analyze great works of literature. Criticism might praise certain elements of literature, but must maintain dissatisfaction with the whole as long as it falls short of the ââ¬Å"fullness of spiritual perfection.â⬠(Leitch 822) The critic is therefore the propagator of art, culture, and society. Through the criticââ¬â¢s work, fresh and true ideas are observed and passed into the world in order to shape and influence the creative mind. Without criticism, the flow of creativity and progress would be detained, according to Arnoldââ¬â¢s thoughts. In conclusion, Matthew Arnold, a Romantic poet transformed into a critic of the Romantic Age contributed highly to the Objective theorist approach to criticism. This contribution is presented through his great prose work ââ¬Å"The Function of Criticism at the Present Time,â⬠in which, the critical concept of an epoch of expansion and an epoch of concentration is presented. An epoch of expansion being an era, in which a poet creatively synthesizes an intellectual cultural moment into a great work of literature and the critic therefore in his epoch of concentration, analyzes this work disinterestedly and presents the weakness and strong points of this, therefore presenting fresher and newer ideas to the poet to be taken in consideration. The poet therefore, takes those ideas and applies them to the later works, which presents the interdependent relationship of both the critic and poet. This concept later on influenced a number of writers and critics and their works and contributed highly to the modern critical theory. I believe that throughout this research paper, I benefited a lot from the information researched and presented and understand Arnoldââ¬â¢s perspective and theory to an extent that I can agree to his theory of the critic and poet being codependent on each others.

Aging in the elderly
There is what people call as the art of getting old. This has probably an element of truth because getting old makes many people seriously inferior, insecure and irritable. To grow old takes wisdom; meaning the aging physical aspects are there but to be gracious about it may help us view our mortality, accept all with humility that limitations are inevitable. Many who were once strong and athletic, the reality of losing oneââ¬â¢s vigor would seem unacceptable. Itââ¬â¢s hard to swallow the negative realism of aging. The simple chores that once were indeed ââ¬Å"simpleâ⬠have now become impossible tasks to some individuals who were once upon a time, mighty competitors in some events in sports.Running may not be advisable anymore. Walking, the most common movement to a normal functioning individual is difficult when arthritis has already crept into his joints (Smith et al, 1997 in http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/article/004023.htm).Physical changes are natural occurre nces of wear and tear and are included in the order of things since time immemorial (Smith, Suzanna et al in Rantanen et al, 1997).This is one of natureââ¬â¢s physical laws that no matter how many technological breakthroughs have been discovered and come to the forefront of human existence, up till now, the best of these man-made intelligent inventions are not able to arrest these signs of deterioration.A senior citizen has to deal with problems such as high blood pressure, the cumulative effects of fatty deposits or cholesterol build up, some parts of the body that almost do not work anymore, and those parts that work may incur pain and a degree of discomfort (Seek wellness, 2000).Physical activity as mentioned, have some benefits to slow down degenerative disorders but are not designed to reverse the course of aging. What is more tragic at times is, whenever people realize that the symptoms of aging are already there, itââ¬â¢s too late for them. They are now coping with regre ts for earlier times and opportunities that had passed; these were opportunities supposed to avert and prevent the speedy physical breakdown and enjoy more quality of life in their later years.Aging people have diminished enjoyments in their twilight years because they are subjected to abuse, mistreatment and exploitations simply because they are appraised as frail and inept by the majority. The increasing isolation they are experiencing even from their own children who, oftentimes, relegate them to homes or institutions do not help diminish the perception of their capabilities (Seek wellness, 2000).Regular exercise does help. Because of the many physical changes that occur in aging, a lot of adjustments as well are in order so that the body is better able to cope with these changes. Two major parts of a personââ¬â¢s physique are affected in the aging process; namely, the muscles and bones. Joints and bonesââ¬â¢ structure become rigid with age. This causes a decrease in height, a bent posture, and hence, pronounced limitations in movements. The prospect of these changes, however, need not hinder nor discourage a person to establish or maintain a regular regimen.Though it may now hurt to move and stretch oneââ¬â¢s joints, to yield to inactivity will all the more result to deterioration and more agony (Smith, in http://nihseniorhealth.gov/exercise/benefitsofexercise/03.html, 2007).Because the tendency of less and less movement goes with aging, and because calcium (a necessary mineral for the bone) is not absorbed into the bones generously as when younger, the resulting consequence is the brittling of the bones, a common cause of skeletal or bone fracture among the elderly. When ligaments connecting bones lose flexibility, it causes pain and discomfort. Older people as compared to younger ones need more cushioned shoes as the fat between the bones of the foot is becoming thinner (______Aging: physical changes). For many of the older or aging individuals the issue about mental health is not affecting them to a significant degree. Problems that commonly beset younger generations such as alcoholism, depression and other illnesses may not necessarily afflict them and in many cases may even be reversed, for instance, dementia, as long as timely treatment is afforded to the patient.Only Alzheimerââ¬â¢s, Parkinsonââ¬â¢s and multi-infarct dementia are cases where the patientââ¬â¢s condition is no longer reversible (Papalia et al, 2002).ConclusionResearchers have provided us with much information on how to help and what kind of services are most likely will yield more positive results where the aging issues are concerned. Gleaning from those available informations, here are some helpful suggestions:Outreach Education (Redwood, 2003). This approach is effective. Most of the elderly are just waiting to be helped. Some of them just do not know how to avail with the resources that the government has made available for them. The least that we can do is to assist them with the help of some social workers or personal outreach just to engage them in the options that are available to them such self-maintenance, exercise regimen, diet, healthy outlook towards their aging years, and treatment or case management services (Baker et al,2000).A regular show of care to establish personal relationship in order to encourage them such as what was suggested by Ms. Banks on reading to the elderly (Griffith, 2000) or to receive preventive and treatment and or intervention options (Telford and Rogers, 2003) as well as catering with their various needs are aspects of educating the elderly.Reference:Baker, D. The Hundred Years War free essay sample
A discussion of the political events that led to the Hundred Year War between the kings of England and France and the events which perpetuated after its closing. A paper which examines the years before, during and after one of the longest running conflicts between England and France the Hundred Year War which ran between the years 1337 and 1453. The paper examines the political ramifications of the war for both parties during the length of the war and after its closing. The Hundred Years War is a rather misleading name for the war between England and France in the fourteenth century. The war between the kings of England and France lasted between 1337 and 1453, which is certainly not hundred years. The war didnt last 116 years either. The number of actual warfare were much less one hundred, since in the course of this 116 year period there were numerous long truces and two treaties of peace intended to put a stop to hostilities entirely. We will write a custom essay sample on The Hundred Years War or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page One must also add that at the time accepted as the end of the war there was no peace treaty. Also, the actual war started in 1337, while bad relations existed between the two kings ever since the Norman take over of the English throne years before the actual starting of the war. The war was affected by the values that the kings of the two countries possessed and the events of the outside world. The war made no important change in the relations of the two lands until its close, when England lost its possessions on the Continent and turned to up-building of sea power.

Writing About Poems Essay Example
Writing About Poems Essay ââ¬Å"Forgiving My Fatherâ⬠is an example of a lyrical poem.à Written by Lucille Clifton, its lines contain the poetââ¬â¢s recriminations against her father (Schilb Clifford 253).à à à à à à à à A lyrical poem relays the poetââ¬â¢s true feelings and thoughts regarding anything that he chooses to write about (Campa, AuthorStream.com).à In this case, Clifton has written about how her father had failed to give her, her siblings and her mother the kind of life that was better than what they lived.à à à The overall tone of the lines of a lyrical poem and the choice of words therein would all depend on the poetââ¬â¢s purpose for writing it (Encyclopedia Britannica, p. 181).à This specific poem, ââ¬Å"Forgiving My Father,â⬠uses some disrespectful lines to describe the authorââ¬â¢s father; at the same time, the poem contains no loving words and no grateful words, either, for the authorââ¬â¢s father. Poets would have to synchronize their specific moods and feelings at the time of writing their pieces with their respective purposes for them (Encyclopedia Britannica, p. 181).à In the case of Cliftonââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"Forgiving My Father,â⬠the lines dwell on a sad topic and the words therein such as ââ¬Å"emptyâ⬠, ââ¬Å"pauperâ⬠, and ââ¬Å"debtorsââ¬â¢ boxesâ⬠all paint a sad picture.à Lucille Clifton used unsavory words such as ââ¬Å"lecherâ⬠and ââ¬Å"liarâ⬠to describe her father, which only served to bolster the glum ââ¬â and a bit bitter ââ¬â tone of the poem. Lyrical poems reveal the poet behind its lines.à The poem ââ¬Å"Forgiving My Fatherâ⬠speaks of how Lucille Clifton needed to forgive her father and how in the end she decided that she ought to forgive him, as follows (Schilb Clifford 253): Daddy old pauper old prisoner, old dead manà à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à 20 what am I doing here collecting?à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à 21 You lie side by side in debtors boxesà à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à 22 and no accounting will open them up.à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à 23 We will write a custom essay sample on Writing About Poems specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now We will write a custom essay sample on Writing About Poems specifically for you FOR ONLY $16.38 $13.9/page Hire Writer We will write a custom essay sample on Writing About Poems specifically for you FOR ONLY $16.38 $13.9/page Hire Writer Lines 20 to 23 make it clear that Lucille Clifton, in the end, realized that it was futile to harbor angry feelings against her father.à After all, he was gone and she had to move with her life.à However she would feel, nothing would bring back her father and mother ââ¬â it was best to let them go, to leave her past behind and to cease pondering on thoughts along ââ¬Å"What ifâ⬠and ââ¬Å"If onlyâ⬠lines. Lucille Clifton, an award-winning writer of poems and childrenââ¬â¢s books, undoubtedly wrote her heart down in her poem ââ¬Å"Forgiving My Father.â⬠à Clifton was born on June 27, 1936 in Depew New York, a suburb of Buffalo (The Circle Association webpage) The poem employs the open poem form.à It consists of 23 lines; it has three stanzas composed of seven, nine and seven lines. There are no pairs of rhyming words in the poem, and it does not seem to employ a rhythm through its lines of varying numbers of syllables. ââ¬Å"Forgiving My Fatherâ⬠speaks of the struggle of the author to blame her father no more for his shortcomings as a father and as a husband.à The poem is an eloquent attempt to voice the authorââ¬â¢s feelings.à The author simply let her heart out with each written line; she cared more for substance and less for the structure and make-up of the poem.à This served to make the poem even more haunting.à While reading it, one feels the repressed anger and disappointment, hurt and desire to lash out which are all elements of the first to nineteenth lines.à Then one feels the authorââ¬â¢s will to let go of her pain with the realization that life must go on and that the ills of the past cannot be undone. Writing the essay was an exercise that was meant to teach me to appreciate poetry and the insight that one gains from reading poems.à As instructed, I selected a poem to focus on and studied in terms of the aspects and qualities that I learned each poem has, according to its purpose, theme and general mood.à Through it all, I hoped to be able to do the same exercise as the normal thing that I would do whenever I come across a poem.à I think the strength of this paper is the openness with which I tried to write my lines.à I would change it only if I can improve my analysis of the elements of the poem, which is the part that I find difficult. The interesting realization that hit me during the exercise is that different people from different parts of the world go through basically the same happy and sad points, high and low points in life.à There would be differences in specific surrounding circumstances born of the uniqueness of each one of us, but the joys and sorrows of people living different lives are often the same and common amongst people.à The author of the poem talked of her anger for her father and her resolve to forgive him.à I somehow know that the same story has occurred over and over again to different people in different places around the world.à I further realize that the poetry we read can sometimes mirror our own feelings and thoughts. The most difficult part about this paper is the identification of the specific elements of the selected piece of poetry.à I am not sure whether or not I did it right, but somehow attempting to do it right made me see that there are alternative styles that an author can choose to adopt in the course of writing his poems.à The MLA format rules also are a bit hard to properly follow; the same rules made me see that I have to study even harder to be able to write well as an educated individual.à Anyhow, I hope our instructor would appreciate my exerted efforts.
